The subject of this brief article illustrates attractive commercial usage of the Elizabethan version of Canada’s most famous stamp, the 50c Bluenose of 1929. The original stamp was reproduced on the 60c value of the “Canada 82” International Youth Stamp Exhibition commemorative set, released in May 20 1982. For this version the printing process was lithography, as opposed to engraving for the1929 issue. Besides the Elizabethan Bluenoses themselves, this cover is attractive with light cancellations, in-period usage, and a genuine rate. The registered letter was posted at Dosquet, Quebec on May 18, 1983, one year less two days from the date of issue of the Canada 82 commemoratives. Registration franking is usually done at post office counters by the clerk. Luckily for stamp collectors, some clerks use up excess commemorative stamps to make up high rate frankings. The rate was constructed as follows:

The basic first class letter rate was 32c and registration for up to $100 indemnity was $1.96 for a total of $2.28 The cover also has nice cancels on the reverse, tracing its journey. Dosquet is located in farm country Southwest of Quebec City. The same day of posting at Dosquet, May 18, it was marked at the registration section of Levis (a suburb of Quebec). It transited at Gateway Mail Processing Centre in Mississauga, ON on May 20 and finally arrived at its destination, Brantford Ontario on May 21. Elizabethan commemoratives, used on cover, in period, are always nice to find. This one has the added bonus of being an affordable way to possess multiple Bluenoses on cover! A great piece of modern postal history!
