Cover of the Month

A nice cover presented by the Webmaster. An interesting piece of postal history.

Yukon Airways return cover Aklavik-Mayo Landing unserviced.

Mail service to Aklavik in the North West Territories, was to have begun on March 25, 1929. However, due to bad weather, the flight was delayed until April 2nd.

The plane left Dawson, Yukon early in the morning but as a result of extreme cold, the engine misbehaved and the pilot was forced to return to Dawson.

The exact amount of mail carried is unknown but in addition to company prepared covers a large number of private covers were also produced as the proposed flight was advertised. Printed covers for the return flight from Aklavik to Dawson and Mayo Landing were prepared by Yukon Airways and these can be found unserviced.

The abandoned flight to Aklavik marked the end of the attempts by Yukon Airways to establish new air mail routes. Even if the attemp was successful, it was doubtful that there would have been enough business bewteen Aklavik and Yukon to justify air mail or passenger service.

A nice cover of Canadian postal history.
