Censor label 'OPENED BY E'.
The label has E on it which was the Allied designation for Trinidad. At this time mail for the US via Air was to be censored
by the US. They did not have trained Censors so British censors assisted.
The logical conclusion is; this is a Trinidad Censor who was training/assisting US censors.
Labels were scarce so they had labels made locally. This label uses the US format 'EXAMINED BY number. The E was to be used
only by Trinidad Censors. Manuscript 605 is on the front and on the label representing the censor number. This number is not known to be
used at Trinidad so would be the US number.
Cover is from New York City via Airmail to Rio de Janerio, Brazil. Franked with a pair of 20 cent US air mail stamps paying a 40 cent rate
tied by New York diplex cancels dated January 12, 1942. Interesting that there are two receiving dates on the reverse. One is misdated 1941.
A terrific piece of postal history! Thanks Bob.
