Registered mail from Warsaw to the International Red Cross in Geneva, with Egyptian censor marks. Mailed December 12 1944 arriving in Geneva July 22 1945.
In the summer of 1944 the Soviets occupying eastern Poland had set up a provisional government known as the “Lublin Government”. The war with Germany was still ongoing and most of Europe still a mess. Mail such as this item would be taken to Moscow then on to Ankara (Turkey), then through Cairo (where this item was examined by the censor), then on to Gibraltar and finally to Switzerland. The British also censored such items in Gibraltar. Some later mail was routed through Beirut (Lebanon) where the Free French censored it.
A super cover from Jerry Piotrowski.
